How to choose the right ink?

Custom UV/LED Inks for Industrial Printing: A Complete Guide

When an ink fails in production, it is almost never about the color. It fails because of adhesion on an untested substrate, curing at a machine speed different from the lab, or resistance to outdoor conditions that nobody specified. That is why a serious industrial ink cannot come from a generic catalog: it must be formulated for the exact surface, machine, and real-world conditions of each client.

Why a Generic Ink Is Not an Industrial Option

Every surface has a unique microstructure and surface energy. The exact same pigment behaves differently on wood, metal, glass, or cardboard, and an ink designed for “everything” ends up being the optimal solution for nothing. At Digiti Signum, we don’t manufacture generic colors: every ink is developed to withstand the exact pressure, climate, and surface of the production line where it will live.

The Complete System: Primer, Ink, and Varnish

An ink rarely works alone. The complete system consists of three layers:

  • Primer (Base Coat): Prepares the substrate and ensures adhesion, even on difficult surfaces such as technical plastics, metal, or glass.
  • Ink (The Color): Precisely formulated for your surface, machine, and real operating conditions, with batch traceability.
  • Varnish (Top Coat): Protects the color against wear and tear and defines the final finish—matte, gloss, or textured.

All three layers are formulated to work together. Ordering just the ink is possible, but the complete system is what guarantees results in real production, not just in a lab sample.

The Custom Development Process

Development follows four phases, from your substrate to the production batch:

  1. Surface: We study the microstructure, surface energy, and real operating conditions of the material.
  2. Formulation: The ink is composed from scratch: viscosity, surface tension, and curing are tailored to your process.
  3. Real-world Testing: Samples are printed on your actual material and subjected to adhesion and durability tests.
  4. Traceable Batch: Scaled up to production with full traceability: every batch is documented and repeatable.

No development moves to production without passing real-world testing on the customer’s material. It is the only way to guarantee that what works in the lab also works on the line.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if my current supplier doesn’t cover my surface properly?

That is exactly when custom formulation makes sense: we analyze your surface, machine, and operating conditions, and develop a specific ink for that particular challenge, complete with technical datasheets and batch traceability.

Do you formulate for any printing technology?

We work with the market’s leading industrial printhead platforms. If your technology isn’t among those we’ve already validated, the first step is a compatibility test before starting the formulation phase.

Can I order only the ink without primer or varnish?

Yes, but we will be honest if your application requires the complete system to guarantee results. We don’t sell layers you don’t need.

Do you have a surface, machine, or operating condition challenge that no catalog ink can solve?

Tell us about your technical challenge.ones de uso que ninguna tinta de catálogo resuelve? Cuéntanos tu desafío técnico.
