UV/LED Masterbatches for Industrial Inkjet Ink: What They Are and Why They Matter

EThe masterbatch is the backbone of any inkjet ink, even though it’s rarely visible. It’s the intermediate process product where pigments and the rest of the ingredients are already finely dispersed — the hardest and most critical part of ink manufacturing is already done before the final ink maker adds a single drop.

Masterbatch vs. finished ink recipe

There are two ways to arrive at an industrial ink:

  • Custom recipes: inks designed specifically for digital printers running piezoelectric printheads, formulated end-to-end for one particular application.
  • Masterbatch: the intermediate process product, with pigments and other ingredients finely dispersed, ready for the ink maker to dilute, adjust and turn into finished ink.

A masterbatch doesn’t compete with a custom recipe — it makes the recipe possible without having to repeat the most complex and costly step (dispersion) in every batch.

The physics behind the precision: why particle size matters

An industrial inkjet printhead fires drops through micro-nozzles. If the pigment’s particle size distribution is wide, some particles are too large for those nozzles: the result is printhead clogging, loss of stability and reduced jettability.

The DS 3970 UV LED masterbatch is produced with INKNOWLOGY, our proprietary dispersion technology built on W.A.B. equipment (Switzerland), and works with a particle size distribution of d90 < 200 nm — meaning 90% of pigment particles fall below 200 nanometers. Without a masterbatch, making ink means a long, multi-stage dispersion process, with multiple milling, adjustment and control stations before reaching a stable product. With a quality UV LED masterbatch, the process comes down to three steps:

  2. Dilution with monomers and resins.
  3. Final viscosity adjustment and quality control (QC).
