UV/LED Printhead Compatibility: A Guide for OEM Integrators
For an OEM integrator or printer manufacturer, the question is never just “what color do I need?”. It’s “will this ink run stable in my printhead, at my line speed, without clogging, for the full service life of the equipment?”. The answer depends on the ink being hardware-agnostic by design from the formulation stage — not adapted afterward.
What “hardware-agnostic” means in an ink
A hardware-agnostic ink or masterbatch is designed to meet the standards of the leading OEM manufacturers, covering all three major printhead technology families:
- Binary (simple drop-on-demand, on/off).
- Grayscale (multiple drop sizes).
- Multidrop (combined drops to vary size and density).
This is only possible if the pigment’s particle distribution is fine and narrow enough to not compromise on any of the three. It’s the same reason dispersion (d90 < 200 nm — see our pillar on UV/LED masterbatches) is the technical starting point, not an afterthought.

Seven platforms, seven distinct printhead architectures — validation isn’t theoretical: each one goes through the same quality control cycle before being confirmed as compatible.
What gets validated on each platform
- Jetting and curing (Alpha-Cure) — drop behavior and integral UV LED curing on the actual printhead and curing system.
- Rheology and surface tension (Brookfield) — viscosity and dynamic fluid behavior, tuned to what each printhead architecture requires.
- Particle size analysis (Malvern) — confirmation that particle distribution stays within tolerance for that specific nozzle.
Validated performance: a real case
On a Xaar 1001 GS 6pl platform, with Phoseon FireJet curing, the DS 3970 UV LED masterbatch achieves perfect curing behavior in single-pass applications running at 24.7 m/min and 6 kHz — with strict EuPIA compliance and total absence of Vinyl Caprolactam. That’s the level of detail behind every ink–printhead–curing combination we validate before recommending it to an integrator.

The starting point is always the same, whether or not your printhead is on the list above: you tell us your printhead platform, your curing system and your real production conditions, and we validate — or develop — the specific formulation for that combination, with technical data sheet and batch traceability.
Frequently asked questions
What if my printhead isn’t on the list of validated platforms? It doesn’t rule out compatibility — it means a specific validation is needed before giving the go-ahead. We evaluate it with a real test run on your equipment.
Can you certify the ink for a specific machine in my line, not just the generic printhead? Yes. Final validation is always done on the real combination of printhead, curing system and substrate — not just on the printhead manufacturer’s generic data sheet.
Does the same formulation work for binary, grayscale and multidrop technology? The dispersion base is agnostic, but fine-tuning of viscosity and curing is validated per technology. We don’t approve a combination without having tested it on that specific architecture.
